Egypt…The Gift of the Nile.

February 28, 2008

Hey,

In social studies lately we have been working on Ancient Egypt. I have learned a lot during this subject. I have learned things about their religion and art, their clothing and traditions, even what kind of food they ate. Also I learned about things like wars they had and how their empire stayed protected for so long. I liked that subject because I found it interesting how long they kept their empire and also I found it interesting how in
Egypt there was barely any change. But we have been working on other things too.

We have also been working on a science fair project. For my science fair project I chose to be partners with Paige. Me and Paige did an experimentation project, we grinded up some different kinds of food then we blond folded a couple different people and plugged their noses then we recorded what they thought the food was, only a couple people guessed it right on the first try. We did this experiment in 3 days with 3 different foods each day. In the end we agreed that “Grind It Up!” was a suitable title for our project. Mr. Fisher has been keeping us busy in our little classroom…but I wouldn’t have it any other way, I found that I learned so much from this experience.

    Hi Kate,

I am glad you didn’t pick me to test for your Science Fair Project, I hate mushy food! Nevertheless, I like your idea alot. As for the Egypt projects we have been doing, I also learned alot. You know how we each had to pick a topic? Mine was art, what was yours?

    Hello Joey (AKA Kate right?),
Glad you liked the Ancient Egypt unit. If you enjoyed that you would probably like reading about the Ancient Greeks or Norse peoples. I personally don’t know too much about their cultures as I’m just a mythology buff. But search up the ones you find kinda interesting out of the following outlines of stories about Ancient Greek and Norse mythologies, it is a neat insight into their culture.

Greek Mythology (Interesting to note that opposed to our stories nowadays these don’t really have many happy endings)

    Narcissus and Echo (Personal fav)
A story about how echo’s came to be and the Narcissus flower (along with narcissism, look it up it’s a good word). It has the moral of not to love those who cannot show love for you.

    Tantulus
A story about the punishment of a foolish king. With the punishment being rather interesting and rather famous. The punishment is that he is given unquenchable thirst and hunger but the kicker is that he is trapped in a river neck high and the water recedes every time he tries to drink. There is also a fruit bearing plant above him but whenever he reaches for the fruit the wind blows it out of his reach.

    Bellerophon
The ultimate hero in Greek mythology (or he is in my opinion). Slays many beasts and tames the Pegasus. Tries to join the gods on Mount Olympus but Zeus casually shoots him and the Pegasus out of the sky with a bolt of lightning.

Other things to look up greek mythology-wise:
    Perseus & the Medusa/Gorgons
    Artemis the huntress
    Persephone Wife of Hades
    Titan Gods; Birth of Zeus
Chaos, the beginning of Greek mythology

    Norse Mythology:

    Skadi
Has to choose her husband by his feet

    Ragnarock
The final battle of the gods and giants, kinda like the rapture or the apocalypse

    Freyja & other Valkyries
Sheildmaidens that take the souls of fallen warriors into the halls of Valhalla where they fight to the death every day in preparation for Ragnarock (and in those halls they are called einherjar).

    Other things to look up:
    Loki the trickster
    Fenris the Wolf
    Thor and his hammer
    Balder/Baldr the beautiful

Hope you enjoy a little bit of the insight into these peoples if you look them up.

    Sincerely,
    GreyMW

I JUST LOVE how Egyptians used to have all that lovely gold and all. Great to hear that you are learning lots and LOTS.
I was wondering, i have riddles on my blog if you want to try them out!!!! They are REAL fun!! Have a go!
